Le BLON (Jacob Christoph). Coloritto ; or the Harmony of Col - Lot 90
Le BLON (Jacob Christoph). Coloritto ; or the Harmony of Colouring in Painting : reduced to Mechanical practice, under easy Precepts, and infallible Rules [...]. / L'Harmonie du coloris dans la peinture ; reduite en pratique mecanique et à des regles sures & faciles [...]. S.l.n.d. [London, 1725]. In-4°, speckled calf, spine with ornamented nerves (period binding). First bilingual edition. VERY FEW COPIES PRINTED. Five plates in trichromy. Copy increased by the Appendix of 7 pp., but not by the four plates that were to accompany it (two other versions of the portrait and two of the palette). Jacob Christoph Le Blon, German painter and engraver (1667-1741), was the inventor of the three- and four-colour process of print reproduction. He used Newton's recent discoveries on the decomposition of light which made him understand that three fundamental colours (blue, yellow and red) were sufficient, by combining them, to reproduce all the colours. It was to explain the application of his discovery to painting that he published his Coloritto in London in 1725. Only about ten copies of this book are known to exist in public libraries. Wetness; handwritten inscription on title page. Lilien, Jacob Christoph Le Blon, Inventor of Three and Four Colour Printing, Stuttgart, Hiersemann, 1985.
