LULLY (Jean-Baptiste). Armide. Tragedy set to music. Paris, - Lot 20
LULLY (Jean-Baptiste). Armide. Tragedy set to music. Paris, À l'Entrée de la Porte de l'Académie Royale de Musique au Palais Royal, ruë Saint-honoré, 1710. Large folio, shagreened calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding).
Title, privilege, 188 pp.
Once again a "Seconde édition gravée par H. de Baussen", famous for its finely engraved prologue frontispieces and act beginnings (pp. 1, 63, 92, 124, 121 & 152). A masterpiece, according to informed opinion, first published in 1686, a year before the death of the Master, whose penultimate composition it was, and for which he was assisted by Quinault, himself inspired by Le Tasse. Joints split, title-piece missing, boards rubbed and corners dulled. Fine handwritten ex-dono "Melle Regnard" on first music page, very good condition inside.
