PIGAFETTA (Filippo). Relatione dell'assedio di Parigi. Rome: - Lot 175
PIGAFETTA (Filippo). Relatione dell'assedio di Parigi. Rome: Printed by Bartolomeo Grassi, n.d. [Colophon: Printed by Iacomo Ruffinello, 1591]. Small Bradel quarto (155 x 215 mm), ivory vellum, title gilded lengthwise on the spine (Yseux, Lord of Thierry-Simier). ff.[Title & Dedication] + 88 pp., signed: [?]2, A-L4. FIRST EDITION of this work on the 1590 siege of Paris by Henry IV, written by a direct eyewitness to the event. Title page adorned with an architectural motif featuring the coat of arms of Pope Gregory XIV, to whom the work is dedicated and for whom the author served as private chamberlain. The map, which is missing from most copies, is included here as a heliogravure reproduction by Dujardin, unbound. This copy is enriched with numerous early 17th-century annotations in Italian written in the margins of the text by two different hands, one of which is likely that of an actor who was a contemporary of the siege of Paris. Traces of an old handwritten bookplate on the title page; very small losses on ff. G4 & H1; those in the margins have been restored. “Relation curieuse” (Brunet, IV, 651).
