HELVÉTIUS (Claude Adrien). *De l'Esprit*. Paris: Durand, Boo - Lot 166
HELVÉTIUS (Claude Adrien). *De l'Esprit*. Paris: Durand, Bookseller, 1758. In-4°, light calfskin, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). [IV] + XXII + 643 + [I (Privilege)] pp. FIRST EDITION, Type B, of this famous work, “censored by the Sorbonne as containing all the poisons scattered throughout various modern books […]” (Tchemerzine). It bears the following characteristics: p. 5 begins with “de,” p. 152 with “-veuglement,” and the beginning of the last line of the first column of the note on p. 550 begins with “Je”; a typographical error in the running title on p. 67 (but not on pp. 97, 179, and 237, which have been corrected); the title page layout features the “M” of the date above the letters “AP” in “Approbation.” Enriched copy featuring the portrait engraved by SAINT-AUBIN after Van LOO as the frontispiece. From the library of Count Colloredo-Mannsfeld, with bookplate. The top edge is damaged; the edges are rubbed; there are a few foxing spots and some yellowed leaves; a small tear on the title page with no text missing. Tchemerzine, VI, 188.
