DEDICATION BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title page: “To Simone Maurois // this essay that I rather like // and which also pleased // André Maurois // I am very touched // by the very elegant // presentation of my letters // and by this little book. // With the utmost respect // I thank you and // kiss your hands // Alain // October 16, 1948.” COPY ENRICHED WITH THREE HANDWRITTEN LETTERS from the author to André Maurois regarding his work (February 3, 1923, September 1, 1924, & March 18, 1929) and a long handwritten letter to the same: “[…] I have read your article, in which you use your influence // as an academician to prove that your mentor Alain // is above many things and many people. It reminded me of an article by Balzac on // Stendhal, which always moves me when I // reread it // Such is the charm of belles-lettres when a // man of recognized talent expresses his ad//miration. And I understand that Stendhal must // have read this tribute with joy; I, too, // have the right to be happy […]” (December 10, 1946; 2 ff. in-12; envelope preserved).
