FIRST EDITION.
COPY ENRICHED WITH A HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR, who is overwhelmed with work and still mourns the loss of Alsace and Lorraine: “Dear colleague, I have // delayed too long in sending you these // meager pages. I am tied up // with ongoing work // that was also behind schedule // and as you can see, I had // to make an immense effort // I’m telling you this—you must // forgive me; I have not // come to terms with this // cession of our provinces; I // still weep over it as I did on // the very first day, and I do not // want anyone to speak to me about it. You // ask me for moving pages, // but it is precisely when I // am too moved that I // cannot say anything worthwhile. I // can’t help it. It’s harder // for me than people think // to stay calm, and we // must remain so; // it’s a matter of decency and // composure in the face of the enemy. // In spite of myself, I’m // outraged by what’s // happening right now, and // perhaps I was wrong to // say so in these pages // where we mustn’t // offend // anyone. If you think // there are a few words // that should be removed, please // let me know, and I will cross them out // on the proof copy that you // would be so kind as to // send me. // Please also tell // our colleagues on the committee // that, while I am // troubled by their insistence, // I have been touched by it and // am // deeply grateful // to you // George Sand // Nohant, 6 October 72.” (December 6, 1872; 3 pp., in-8°; paper with “GS” watermark).
