Trained in François Lemaire's studio and influenced by Hyacinthe Rigaud, Santerre made his mark at the crossroads of the Grand Siècle and the Regency periods with a style combining solemnity and psychological truth. Christian-Louis de Montmorency-Luxembourg is the grandson of the famous Marshal François-Henri de Montmorency-Luxembourg. He led a military career in the service of Louis XIV, taking part in the last campaigns of the reign and rising to the highest offices, culminating in his appointment as Marshal of France.
