Van Loo received rigorous artistic training from his older brother, Jean-Baptiste van Loo, at an early age. He completed his apprenticeship in Italy, spending time in Rome and Turin, where he studied the late Baroque masters as well as Antiquity, the indispensable foundation of great history painting. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1724, he deepened his study of portraiture, monumental composition and clear narrative, qualities that were to leave a lasting mark on his work.
