Johann Abraham Peter SCHULZ (1747-1800) Chorus from Athalie. - Lot 202
Johann Abraham Peter SCHULZ (1747-1800) Chorus from Athalie. Hambourg, chez Hoffmann, libraire, 1786; Kiel et Hambourg, herausgegeben von J.B. Cramer, 1786. 2 scores bound in an oblong folio volume, full contemporary blond calf: Orchestral score, title, [5], XII and 120 pp.; Piano reduction, title, XXXIV (libretto), XXXV-XXXVIII (overture), 43 pp. Original editions, the rarest of reunions: the reduction by Cramer follows the orchestral score! "A Danish composer of German origin belonging to the Berlin School, Schulz is considered the creator of Danish comic opera and lieder": this is how Mac Honegger presents the composer in his Dictionnaire de la musique. Slight foxing, attractive binding with finely decorated spine, very slight spotting. Also included: *Georg Friedrich HAENDEL (1685-1759). Sansone; Athalia, Oratorios. [Paris, publisher unknown (Carli, Pleyel?), no plate number, c. 1840], in-folio, green half vellum, 101 and 133 pp. The absence of the two title pages of these piano and vocal reductions does not help to describe these scores, which are probably the first French editions, the musical typography being close to the joint editions by Carli and Pleyel of other Handel scores. Lead pencil indications in place of titles, missing binding spine, with handwritten labels on spine and first board.
