Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE (1810-1892) Cup called "D'Alesia" or Canthare d'Alise-Sainte-Reine, after a 1st century antique model Silver-plated bronze, after the original that belonged to H.M. Emperor Napoleon III. Black marble pedestal. Cup height 11 cm - Total height 27 cm Ferdinand Barbedienne was authorized by the Emperor to make a mold of the canthare to provide the city of Dijon with an exact replica. From this mold, he made several prints. Today, one copy is in the Château de Compiègne and another in the Musée d'Orsay. The original is kept at the Musée des Antiquités Nationales in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Our copy appears to be one of the few and first replicas produced for Napoleon III. A similar cup was presented at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1878 on the stand of Ferdinand Barbedienne.
