Amstelodami, apud Danielem Elzevirium, 1678, in-12, long-grained blue morocco, cold-stamped roulette around the boards, gilt fleurons at the corners with a riddled background, rhomboid iron in the center with a riddled background, ribbed spine decorated with the same, peach moiré silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges (R.P. A leading figure in Parisian bookbinding in the first half of the 19th century, Joseph Thouvenin trained in the workshop of François Bozerian, known as le Jeune. He opened his own workshop in 1813 and practiced until 1834. His name, associated with the masterpieces of Romantic bookbinding, was praised by Balzac and Stendhal in their works, and Charles Nodier (1780-1844), curator of the Arsenal library and a demanding bibliophile, maintained a privileged relationship with him. The engraved title shield bears the initials S.P.Q.R. Edges rubbed. One corner slightly crushed. Dimensions : 146 x 79 mm. Provenance: Béraldi (Cat. V, 1935, no. 47). Willems (A.), Les Elzevier, 1548; Culot (P.), Relieurs et reliures décorées en France à l'époque romantique, bibliotheca Wittockiana, 1995, pp. 560-561 (note on Thouvenin).
