[...]. MERCURE françois ou suite de l'histoire de notre temps, sous le règne du Très-Chrestien Roi de France & de Navarre Louis XIII... Es années 1641, 1642 & 1643. [Vingt-quatrième tome]. À Paris, Olivier de Varennes, 1647, fort vol. in-8°, red morocco, gilded fillets around the boards, arms in the center, ornate ribbed spine, gilded edges (17th century binding). Collation: 2 ff. (Title and Avis au lecteur), 1105 pp, 7 ff. ("Sommaire par ordre alphabétique de ce qui est contenu dans ce volume"). Le Mercure françois is a periodical publication, considered to be the first known French journal to be written in the French language, rather than in Latin. Published annually at the very beginning of the 17th century in octavo format, it is attributed to the printer-librarians Jean and Estienne Richer. In fact, 25 volumes were printed in 35 years between 1613 and 1648. Two articles are devoted to the Turks, on p. 300 "Esclaves turcs baptisez à Rome" and p. 424 "Turcs se jettent en Hongrie". A copy bearing the arms of the Marquise de Montespan (1641-1707). "Books by the Marquise de Montespan are very rare." (Quentin-Bauchart, Les Femmes bibliophiles, I, pp. 303-306, cites only 6 titles with her arms). Minor worm damage to upper right corner. Size: 163 x 109 mm. Provenance: René Escande de Messières, with his bookplate. Sgard (J.), Dictionnaire des journaux, 1600-1789, T. II, 937.
