Keschan carpet - Lot 331
Keschan carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), central Persia, circa 1930 203 x 130 The carpet is decorated with a large polychrome central rose window, extended by two pendants on a red background enhanced by a floral design. The whole composition is decorated with four blue spandrels with scrolls of flowers. The main navy blue border with small multicolored flowers is framed by two ivory counter-borders. Kechan was very early a city renowned for the cultivation of mulberry trees and the spinning of silk. The fabrics and shawls of Kashan were famous during the Sephardic period (16th-18th century) and many "Polish" carpets were woven there. From the second half of the 19th century, Kechan again played an important role in the Persian production of quality carpets, especially thanks to Mostashem, a weaver who gave his name to quality carpets.
