Chirvan Dagestan carpet - Lot 325
Chirvan Dagestan carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), East Caucasus, circa 1920 184 x 136 The red background is enhanced with small geometric floral motifs repeating on a red background. The main ivory border with successive blue, yellow, red and wine-colored geometric motifs is framed by numerous counter-borders. "The Caucasus, despite the diversity of its population, has always shown in its carpets, an amazing unity of style. The colors are clear and straightforward, the decorations, affirmed, incline to pure geometries. Behind this unity, we can guess two influences which were not only cultural: that of Ottoman Turkey which controlled the western part and the center, that of Persia of the Sefevids (1501-1722) which formerly possessed all of Azerbaijan."[1] The Republic of Dagestan extends in the eastern part of the Caucasus to the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Dagestan, which means "Land of Mountains", is a region occupied largely by mountainous terrain, which has offered refuge to many populations from Asia and pastures for their herds.
