Important desk with coffers - Lot 212
Important desk with coffers Rectangular shape in red tortoiseshell and brass veneer, inlaid with flowering vases, birds, scrolls, acanthus leaves, swans holding garlands. The slightly curved front presents seven drawers. Legs slightly arched. Decorated with chased and gilded bronzes such as: falls with empanelled heads, animal hooves. Regency period (resumption of the marquetry, restorations) Height : 79,5 cm ; Width : 179 cm ; Depth : 85,5 cm This desk presents falls that can be found on furniture of the cabinetmaker Etienne Doirat, studied since 1985 by J.D. Augarde (1). However, despite the presence of similar falls on a chest of drawers in stamped amaranth veneer (2) and a desk attributed to this cabinetmaker (3), it seems that Doirat never made a piece of furniture in Boulle marquetry. The attribution of this desk to a cabinetmaker of the first third of the XVIIIth century, seems to be close to the work of B.V.R.B. I. (1). Etienne Doirat, ebony carpenter by J. D. Augarde in The John Paul Getty Museum Journal, volume XIII, 1985, pp. 33 to 52. (2). Millon sale, Paris, October 10, 1997, n°168 (3). Christie's sale, London, December 17, 2002, n°33.
