Knife with compass head, called "A la Berge". Steel blade st - Lot 34
Knife with compass head, called "A la Berge". Steel blade stamped with the name of the Jurande de "CAEN", the "A" crowned, idem on the silver blade. Silver bolsters in the form of half-shells. Green lacquer ribs held in overhang by the silver plates. The lacquer is cast around silver motifs, chips and mother-of-pearl pastilles. Our cutler is also a goldsmith and master in his art, the silver patterns are on one side; the mounting of a mother-of-pearl shield unfurnished, two quivers linked, an angel, looking up at two birds in a beak, just below a dog wearing a collar is lying, it seems to watch the scene. At the foot, a gentleman with his hands joined seems to be praying while walking. On the other side, another silver mounting of an unfurnished mother-of-pearl crest placed on a vegetal scroll. Underneath, an angel seated under a canopy holding a heart in his left hand. At the foot, a paunchy merchant holds a draper's measuring tape. A few chips of mother-of-pearl are missing, without importance in front of the beauty and the originality of these decorations. W : 21,1 cm. F : 11,4 cm. Middle of the 18th century. Normandy, France.
