BERNARDIN de SAINT-PIERRE (Jacques Henri). Paul and Virginia. Paris, L. Curmer, 1838. Large in-8°, red chagrin, boards entirely decorated with a gilt geometrical fillet, spine with nerves decorated in the same way, gilt head (period binding). FIRST ISSUE (at the address of the rue Sainte-Anne). 29 plates including a frontispiece and a coloured map of the Île-de-France, all wood-engraved, and seven steel-engraved hors-texte portraits after LAFFITTE, JOHANNOT & MEISSONIER (all these hors-texte are on chine, mounted on vellum, and the seven portraits are accompanied by captioned serpents). The illustration also includes about 450 vignettes, all woodcuts after MEISSONIER, Tony JOHANNOT, FRANÇAIS, ISABEY, STEINHEIL, etc. The portrait of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre is embellished with a remark on the sphere. ONE OF A FEW EXAMPLES (35 ?) OF THE LUXURY ISSUE ON CHINESE. Some foxing; booklet on pp. 421-424 poorly bound after p. 416. "Copies on china bound at the time are of great rarity" (Carteret, IV, 532-547).
