HUGO (Victor). L. A. S. 4 pp. in-8°, to Alfred Barbou. Paris - Lot 4
HUGO (Victor). L. A. S. 4 pp. in-8°, to Alfred Barbou. Paris, December 23, 1879. He declares at first to refuse to read any manuscript of a book dedicated to him : " not even the one of Mrs Victor Hugo [...] so noble and so touching [...] whatever the judgement that one carries on me, I am quiet, my literary attempt, my social attempt, are three efforts towards the good. I have never been angry except against evil [...] We are with all those who have had the desire to see a decrease in human suffering [...] what Socrates wanted is wanted by Molière; what Jesus wanted is wanted by Voltaire [...]". Very beautiful letter published in the Correspondances (Paris, Albin Michel, t. IV, p. 69)
