ALEXEIEFF Alexander. Seven autograph letters signed to Roger - Lot 187
ALEXEIEFF Alexander. Seven autograph letters signed to Roger Brielle. Two dated 1929. 16 pages in-4 in ink. Warm correspondence to the painter Roger Brielle, in which Alexeieff retraces his life and tells him about his artistic career: "... I didn't understand the cubists. However, I thought they were smarter than me; I didn't think they were charlatans. I had a lot of respect for them... I married an actress from the Théâtre Pitoëff... I made models of sets and executed the sets myself... I began to learn engraving. I met Mr. Gengenbach, who was the defrocked abbot of the Surrealists. He was even more miserable than I was, so I took him in at home. He introduced me to Soupault, who had me make my first woodcut book "La Pharmacienne" by Giraudoux, at the Cahiers Libres... I think that bile is a good thing to create; that energy and pride are good too; health too is a store of strength to transform them into bile, enthusiasm. And finally emotion, the pathetic. It's like the waves of the sea leaping one after the other..." (A few stains, small holes and a slight lack of one, folds).
