Honoré Daumier - Lot 116
Honoré Daumier Manner of Encouraging French Workers in Egypt, plate 111 of the suite Actualités, 1859, lithograph, 24 x 27 cm, margins 27 x 35 cm (Delteil 3222), very beautiful and rare proof on brown thin vellum bearing the certificate of edition signed by Destouches and dated 2 November 1859 and the following annotations added by the censorship officials of the Ministry of the Interior: "faut-il autoriser? / no", small tear in the lower margin, provenance: Ch. Malherbe (Lugt 566); O. Gerstenberg (L. 2875). This proof is reproduced in L. Delteil, Honoré Daumier (VIII), Paris, 1926 and in R. Passeron, Daumier, témoin de son temps, Fribourg, 1979, ill. 199, p. 266. "The digging of the Suez Canal (1854-1869), under the direction of Ferdinand de Lesseps, was slowed down by several English interventions in Egypt. The English government, worried to see France take control of the route to the Indies, regularly put pressure on the pasha of Egypt, Saïd Pacha, to stop the work. This is the subject of Daumier's lithograph which, for diplomatic reasons, the French government banned from publication" (Daumier, l'écriture du lithographe, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2008, n°210, p. 173). Only three proofs of this plate are known (Bibliothèque nationale de France, former Gaston-Dreyfus collection and this one).
