Honoré Daumier - Lot 105
Honoré Daumier Théobald Lacrosse, plate 43 of the suite Les Représentants représentés, 1849, lithograph, 26.5 x 18.5 cm, margins 35.5 x 26 cm (Delteil 1841 i/ii), very beautiful and unique proof before the letter, with a proposed caption glued under the image, folded in eight, probably for Daumier to send to the Charivari editorial staff. This proof is reproduced in R. Passeron, Daumier, témoin de son temps, Fribourg, 1979, ill. 43, p. 94. The handwritten legend proposal, perhaps written in Daumier's hand, is close to the definitive legend (Théobald Lacrosse / Lacrosse, Minister of Public Works, - not to be confused with Hyacinthe du / Théâtre Montansier / Lacrosse always looks very happy satisfied satisfied, probably called Théobald). We know of a few very rare proofs bearing legendary essays on leaves glued in the margin (see Daumier, lithographer's handwriting, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2008, nos. 196 and 198 (with the same blue paper), pp. 166-167). Théobald Lacrosse (1796-1865), a naval officer, deputy between 1834 and 1848, was Minister of Public Works in 1848-1849.
