Rembrandt - Lot 66
Rembrandt Jésus-Christ prêchant ou La Petite tombe, c. 1657, etching, burin and drypoint, 15.5 x 20.5 cm, cut at the copper mark or margin thread (New Hollstein 298 i/ii), very fine proof, with some beards and the white sleeve, but before Watelet's retouching, watermark: countermark, provenance: J. F. Gautier (Lugt 1463a). We owe the title La Petite tombe to the collector Nicolaes de La Tombe who commissioned the print and was its first owner. Later, Gersaint, Rembrandt's first cataloguer at the beginning of the 18th century, believed that the name came from the stone on which Jesus stands. The first proofs of this plate are said to be "with black sleeve", the copper being covered with beards, notably on the right sleeve of the man with the turban in the foreground on the left. In our trial, most of the beards have come off and the sleeve has become "white".
