Buddha - Lot 86
Buddha Thailand, Mon Dvaravati period, circa 8th century Copper alloy, height: 24.8 cm Provenance: Japanese collection from the 1990's Spink and Son Ltd, London, 1990s. The Buddha has a broad face, full lips, almond-shaped eyes with slightly arched eyebrows converging on a short, broad nose. His hair is treated in small juxtaposed curls, his ushnisha surmounted by a lotus bud. The distended earlobes of her ears are reminiscent of the mundane life before her renunciation. With both hands making the gesture of argumentation, the Buddha is standing dressed in sanghati covering both shoulders and perfectly fitting the shape of the body. This garment is directly inspired by the Indian Gupta art of the 5-6th centuries. A very beautiful example of the beginnings of Buddhist statuary in Southeast Asia.
