Italian school of the late 16th or early 17th century. - Lot 67
Italian school of the late 16th or early 17th century. Two winged dragons leaning against each other, their heads contorted and facing each other, trampling a snake. Pen and brown ink, grey wash, white chalk on paper. 132 x 241 mm. This mysterious drawing, which we have described according to the heraldic lexicon, is certainly an attempt at an emblem. Omnipresent in the medieval symbolic world, the dragon traditionally decorates pagan banners and is associated with sin, Evil, the Antichrist, and is defeated by Saint George. The work is perhaps preparatory to decorative arts (textile or ceremonial tableware), perhaps with a military vocation (armour decoration, banner, hiccups). According to our research, only one family in Europe wears this piece of furniture on their arms, the Trara family from Sicily: a golden and sandy piece of furniture with two dragons leaning against each other, their heads contorted and facing each other (Rietstap).
