Late 18th century Roman school. - Lot 65
Late 18th century Roman school. View from the staircase of the Spanish Steps, the obelisk, the Villa Medici and the Trinità dei Monti church. Pen and brown ink, brown wash, in a brown ink frame, on paper. 285 x 195 mm. Annotated, on the back, in ink: Roma Trinita Al Monte. Our drawing shows the obelisk of Salluste, installed at this location at the request of Pope Pius VI, in 1788, offering a friendly gesture to France, protector of the Church of the Trinity of the Mounts. The point of view chosen by the designer, oriented towards the North, was successful, making it possible to show, in a fairly tight frame, four picturesque architectural elements of the Roman landscape. An almost identical view, by an anonymous yet contemporary hand, is known from the Detroit Institute of Art (inv.2003.145), as well as the famous painting of the Louvre, by François-Marius Granet, of 1808 (Lens, Louvre-Lens, RF-1981-12).
