CHINE - de style archaïque - Lot 146
CHINE - de style archaïque CHINA - archaic style Large double double disc in green nephrite with light relief decoration of nail motifs, the central motif finely chiselled with twists, decorated on each side with stylised openwork chilong Disc diameter.12.2 cm. Total length: 20.3 cm. (old restoration) Provenance: old French family collection Note: the "bi" disc (also called the "pi" disc) is a kind of circular jade artefact, dating back to ancient China. The first bi discs were produced during the Neolithic period, particularly by the Liangzhu culture (3400-2250 BC). Later samples date from the period of the Shang, Zhou and Han dynasties. From these early times, the bi disc was buried with the dead person, as a celestial symbol accompanying the deceased to the afterlife or 'heaven', as well as a 'cong' connecting the body to the earth. These objects were ceremoniously placed inside the tomb on the bodies of people of high social status.
